Description
The Festival of the Cranes is an annual celebration of the return of migrating birds to Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge south of Socorro, New Mexico. Thousands of sandhill cranes, ducks, geese, and other birds spend the winter at the Bosque. The Festival is in mid-November and consists of tours of the Bosque, wildlife lectures, and arts and crafts shows.
The Festival of the Crayons, created by Becky Titus, is a companion festival held at the same time of the year. It's a fun display of giant Crayons, including a Whooping Crayon. The Crayons are made of 12" diameter cardboard tubes, painted to look like real Crayons. The tips are made of hardware cloth and plaster, and they are fashioned to look like each Crayon has been used a different amount. The Crayons range in height from 2 ft to 7.5 ft. The Whooping Crayon is 30" diameter and a whopping 14 ft tall! Some of the Crayons are "traditional" colors and some of the colors are unique to the Festival set, with names like Sandhill, Adobe, Strawberry Peak (a small mountain west of Socorro), Tumbleweed, Banana, Dandelion, and Spam.
The Festival of the Crayons is displayed in the yard of a house on School of Mines Rd. in Socorro. It’s just for fun - people stop by and take pictures and pick out their favorite Crayon. The Crayons have been featured on the local news a couple of times, and have appeared in magazines, newspapers, and calendars showing public art around the state.
There are many volunteers who help with the Festival of the Cranes and the Festival of the Crayons. Great thanks to all the volunteers!
